Syria is subdivided in a hierarchical manner to subdivisions: *14 Governorates (muhafazah) * *65 Districts (mintaqah) * * *284 Sub-districts (nahiyah) Each of the 14 Syrian governorates (''muhafazat'', singular ''muhafaza'') is divided into many districts. The total number of the districts (''manatiq'', singular ''mantiqah'') in Syria is 65, each of them is divided into smaller sub-districts (''nawahi'', singular ''nahiyah''). A total of 284 sub-districts are formed in Syria.〔 Each of the Syrian governorates and districts has its own centre, except of the Rif Dimashq Governorate and Markaz Rif Dimashq district. All of the sub-districts have their own centres as well. In all of the districts in Syria, the district bears the same name as its capital with only one exception; the Mount Simeon District where the capital is the city of Aleppo. The same goes to all of the sub-districts except of the "Mount Simeon Central Sub-district" with the city of Aleppo being its centre. ==Governorate and district capital cities== Amongst the 65 districts of Syria, 64 districts have their regional capitals (administrative centres).
